In the winter of 2025
I
was asked to recreate a table lamp I made somewhere around 1980. That
artwork can be seen here.
This new version was made the same way I made the first lampshade, by
chipping out each piece of glass one at a time with a pair of glass pliers and then tack-soldering
each piece into place. This is very different from the usual way I make
stained glass artworks because there are no paper patterns for cutting
the pieces of glass, only a sketch of the whole seashell to which I
keep comparing the ever-growing artwork. I did this for each half of
the lampshade, then filled in the middle rows of pieces that joined the
two halves. I left a hole at the bottom so I could mount the stained
glass to the walnut base (which a very creative friend helped me make).
The hole in the bottom of the stained glass seashell also allowed me to mount
the light socket, which holds an LED bulb. The wire for the lighting
exits the side of the walnut base, and a line switch is mounted to make
it easy to turn the light on and off.
The client was thrilled.
