In the fall of 2025 I was commissioned to make stained glass windows
for a set of entry doors that
incorporated mouth blown glass rondels. After researching sources for
the rondels, I found Monarch
Glass Studio in Kansas City. This man, Tyler Kimball, makes
rondels in many sizes and colors. After consulting with my
client about the colors he wanted, I ordered 80 mouth blown rondels at
3.75 inches apiece. Once they arrived, I made the panels you see here.
The glass surrounding the rondels is a glue-chipped glass that I found
out is no longer made. Luckily, I had just enough of it to complete
these panels.
This commission was a surprise for the client's wife, so my son and I
installed
the panels while the couple was out of town. She was greatly surprised
and they both love their new stained glass entry doors.
The installation required removing the thermal (double-paned) glass
units that were already in the doors. We had to make a new unit that
was as thick (about 1 inch) as the unit that came out of each door. To
do this, I ordered sheets of tempered clear glass that were the same
size as the old thermal units. Then, we laid the tempered glass on a
work surface, and built up the edges with two-sided black foam tape
until the thickness would match the old unit once the stained glass was
laid on top of the tapes. This made a new unit that was the same
thickness as the old unit, and these we installed in the doors.
